Why StreamX was built
Every IPTV app I tried required sideloading, accounts, or paid subscriptions just to watch publicly available channels. I wanted something that works by simply opening a browser. No install. No signup. Just click and watch.
HLS playback through a CORS proxy, real-time verification of 11,000+ channels, PWA support, and mobile-first UI — all in a Next.js App Router app. It's the kind of project that teaches you more than any tutorial.
Building for the open web means thinking about edge cases: malformed M3U entries, Unicode channel names, dead streams, cold server starts, race conditions in HLS.js, and Service Worker caching conflicts. Every error state was anticipated and handled.
What I learned building this
- HLS.js lifecycle management is harder than it looks — one wrong cleanup causes resource leaks
- Service Workers must never cache live video streams like static assets
- Server-side verification through a proxy is the only way to know if a stream actually works
- localStorage with TTL expiry is underrated for dead channel tracking without a database

About StreamX
StreamX is a browser-based live TV directory and player. It does not host, encode, store, or redistribute any video content. Channel metadata and stream URLs are read directly from the publicly available iptv-org/iptv playlist, and playback happens directly between your browser and each stream's original third-party source.
Data source: channel list and metadata are sourced from iptv-org/iptv under its own license terms. StreamX does not claim ownership of, or responsibility for, the individual streams listed.
Privacy: StreamX does not require an account. Favorites and recently-watched history are stored only in your browser's local storage and are never sent to a server.
StreamX does not host television content. Channel streams are provided by their respective third-party sources. Availability, geographic access, playback compatibility, and rights may vary by provider.
